COURSE May - Free Lesson Month PGA Professional Mark Hilyard of Hillcrest Golf Course will offer free 10-minute lessons during the month of May in conjunction with the 11th annual Play Golf America’s PGA Free Lesson Month. To schedule your free 10-minute lesson, call Mark Hilyard at 620-252-6190. Play Golf America's PGA Free Lesson Month is designed to bring new people to the sport and help existing golfers improve their game with a free, 10-minute golf lesson conducted by PGA/LPGA Professionals. The PGA of America and Golf Digest jointly launched this successful campaign in 1998. PGA Free Lesson Month is a growth-of-the-game initiative between The PGA of America, Golf Digest, the GOLF CHANNEL, Golf For Women and Golf World. Nike Golf is the official program sweepstakes sponsor and will donate $1 per sweepstakes card (up to 15,000) to the Tiger Woods Foundation and subsidize a complimentary subscription to Golf Digest.
Hillcrest opened for play on June 18, 1933 as Hillcrest Country Club. After ten years, the effects of the Depression along with World War II took its toll and Hillcrest Country Club went broke. In 1943, the course was sold to the City of Coffeyville for $1. Designer Perry Maxwell was known for his severely undulating greens and significant contours according to contemporary golf course architect Robert Trent Jones. Maxwell also designed Southern Hills Golf Course in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and the first nine holes at Prairie Dunes in Hutchinson, Kansas.
